The Last Guy

I saw some screenshots of The Last Guy and had no idea what it was about. It seemed like a very simple game that someone just put together for fun. I heard nothing about this game before it’s release and I still don’t hear much about it afterward. The Last Guy is a sleeper hit in my book. TLG is available on the PS3 through the PSN for $9.99.

The object of TLG is to find survivors scattered around the city, once you find them they will start to follow you, creating a long trail of humans behind you. You are not however a human, you are a zombie turned good guy trying to save the human race from the other bad zombies. Once you have the humans following you, you are to bring them back to the safe zone. You are required to save a certain amount of people in a certain amount of time, these two things will fluctuate along all the levels. Sometimes you need to save 1,500 people in 8 mins and sometimes you need to save 800 in 3 minutes. Now you can go the route of grabbing people and quickly dropping them off or you can keep growing the trail behind you, if you do this your stamina will increase letting you run longer and gather your people quicker. Different zombies will appear in each of the different levels each posing a unique threat. The one thing that interests me about The Last Guy is its use of a Google Earth style layout design. The levels in TLG are taken straight from Google Earth and tweaked a bit. You will encounter many different real-world locations along the way.

I had a lot of fun with The Last Guy and I am very happy with my decision to purchase it. My wife is also very addicted to it. It’s the simple gameplay mechanic of gathering people and returning them to safety that makes this game a great play for anyone. Although it does get pretty challenging in the later levels it is fun enough to make you want to keep trying without getting too frustrated. It does suck however when you have 999 people out of 1000 and your time runs out, this has happened to my wife.

The Last Guy is a unique game from all angles but it’s the Google Maps level integration that makes this one unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Go download the demo now on PSN to try it out for yourself.
