Call of Duty: Black Ops Multiplayer Revealed

Tonight in Los Angeles was Treyarch’s big reveal party for their upcoming Call of Duty title, Black Ops.  During the event (which I believe is still going on as I write this) they showed some new and exciting changes for their next installment that is sure to excite fans of the game.  So instead of me rambling on, let me tell you some of the things you may have missed.

Treyarch understands that there may be some newcomers to the first person genre, and maybe they want to start off slow instead of being tossed right in to the fire.  One new mode they talked about was called Combat Training.  This allows new players to get into a multiplayer environment but only to face A.I. bots.  It can be a good way for little Jimmy who just got the game for Christmas to learn some of the basics before hopping in there with the rest of us vultures. Hey, noobs need some loving too.

Next up and possibly one of the biggest changes to the COD multiplayer world, has to be CP.  That’s right, CP which stands for Call of Duty Points.  Now the game will reward you with money when you level up instead of just experience points.  With the money that you accumulate the choice will be yours to decide what you want next in your aresenal.  No longer do you have to wait until you reach level 42 to get that awesome assault rifle that you love so much.  Instead, kick some butt online, earn a few bucks and buy whatever you want, when you want it.  As far as I know, perks will be done the same way, as well as other things like attachments and so on.  Everything is done with money.  I’m sure Treyarch will balance everything well enough so that the better guns/perks will cost you a few more CP then others will.  But we will have to put our faith into Treyarch and hope they do the right thing, I’m putting all my CP on them!

Theater mode was something that has been talked about a lot lately after the footage we’ve seen from the most recent multiplayer trailer. This is something that Bungie has had in Halo for quite a while now, and Treyarch is taking a page out of the Halo book to try and make it even better.  Each player will get a file share space where you can save films, screenshots, or even custom game settings.  Everything can be searched and viewed by any player.  No longer do you have to go on youtube and type “sick3st call of DUtyy Kilz”.  Everything will be right there for the players viewing pleasure.

Now I thought I would save the best for last, and in my opinion this next thing I’ am about to tell you really takes the cake.  Treyarch is implementing four new game modes thrown into the mix titled Wager Match.  Wager Match is four free for all themed brand new game modes that allow you to wager your Call of Duty Points that you have earned while playing multiplayer.  The four modes announced are called: One in the chamber, sticks and stones, sharpshooter, and gun game.  Let me explain in a little more detail what these modes are all about.

One in the chamber- This mode starts players off with only a pistol, one bullet, and three lives.  With each kill you get, you will take that player’s bullet.  But shoot and miss your target, then you are only left with your melee knife.  So use your bullets wisely.

Sticks and Stones- This game type sounds very interesting to me.  You start off with a crossbow, a ballistic knife, and a tomahawk.  The point is to obviously kill your opponent, but if you so much desire to take them out with the tomahawk, then that player will go bankrupt and will lose all the money they wagered for that game.

Gun Game- Probably my most favorite of them all. Gun Game starts everyone off with just a lonely pistol, no need to worry though, with each kill you will be granted the next best weapon and so on and so forth.  The player who goes through all the series of weapons, will win the match.  Just be careful you don’t find a knife in your back.  It will set you back to the previous weapon.

Sharpshooter:  Last but certainly not least, is Sharpshooter.  Sharpshooter starts off with everyone receiving the same random gun that is chosen at the beginning of the match.  Every two minutes or so the gun will change to another random weapon.  Every kill you come across, will earn you a new perk as well.

That’s a lot to take in for one day, but overall I’ am pretty pleased with some of the new things Treyarch is bringing to Black Ops.  You can bet there will be more information surfacing today, so be sure to come on back and check out this post for all the up to minute news regarding Black Ops.

In the meantime, check out the video below with Design Director, David Vonderhaar and Online Director, Dan Bunting as they show some gameplay footage of all the new wager match modes.
