Everyday MODders – Torchlight

Hey everybody!  Welcome to a new series, here at EDG, called Everyday MODders.  This is a segment where we’d like to feature some of the better MODs that we’ve come across, during our playtime, and those that we highly recommend.  Now, we can’t play every game and every mod, so if you see something you think is worthy of a feature, shoot me a message at chris@everydaygamers.com.

For now, we will focus on a packaged class update mod for Torchlight, called Jarcho’s Class Compilation.  The Mod compiles 23 of the author’s favorite class mods into one pack, for you to install.  Each class features a variety of changes and unique content–for example, one may simply feature a new character skin and customized skills and attributes, where the next may have a completely renovated character appearance an unique game intro.

The beauty of this mod is that it opens up so many doors, all at once.  Each new class comes from different designers, so, as mentioned, no two play the same.  In my opinion, that adds to the fun.  Starting a new game is like unwrapping a present, you don’t know if there will be a customized intro, new animals to morph your pet into, sweet new customized gear tailored to the new class, or what to expect.  Playing the Assassin adds a plethora of fishing holes–I don’t see the correlation between assassins and fishing, but within minutes of starting my game, I found an axe, while fishing, that transformed my dog, permanently, into a demonic familiar—complete with fire attacks.  Couple that with the fact that most, if not all of these classes, have customized skill trees, and it’s easy to look past the familiar character skins.   I’m sure these may sound like minor, almost cosmetic changes, but it’s small details like that that make exploring Torchlight’s depths feel like a fresh new experience, all over again.  Add to it, that there are so many classes in one pack, and you have hours of life breathed back into a game that was fantastic from the beginning.  Most classes are simple variations of the three original classes, some changed less subtly than others, but each offering a fresh new spin on an old favorite.  Consider that the original game offers three classes, and this free content multiplies the original content eight-fold, at the low, low price of free.  Even if you haven’t played Torchlight before, this could be the reason to give it a try.  If you are curious, you can take mods for a spin in the Torchlight demo, but the game will still halt at the same spot, so there’s even the bonus of trying before you buy!  What more can you ask for?
