Video Game Apocalypse: Day 5
Well folks, this looks like our last day. Our apocalyptic journey has let us play through worlds destroyed by demons and angels, wastelands created from nuclear war, worlds overrun with zombies, and humans enslaved by an alien race. Today’s game takes out all of that…No zombies or nuclear war, no alien races or crazy robots…No gods. No kings. Only man.
Bioshock
(Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
I can think of no better game to end the world with than with Bioshock. Not only is it one of my favorite games of all time, but the setting for the game is a perfect fit for May 21st. Welcome to Rapture. The moment you step foot into the entrance of Rapture you can tell this will be an experience unlike most games out there. A giant statue of Andrew Ryan looms over you holding a banner with “No gods or kings. Only Man.” on it. From there, you plunge into the dark and disturbing world of Rapture. Rapture makes its home at the bottom of the ocean floor. The buildings and art are crafted in a style that is a mixture of Steampunk and Art Deco. When the neon lights are on, it can be a place of great inspiration and beauty, but when the lights go out (and most of them are), paranoia and monsters await you in the shadows. It is very quick to see, this is a world tearing itself apart.
Bioshock takes us into a world where mankind is freed from rules and authority. Where freedom of science, art, and imagination can run wild. Andrew Ryan, the creator of Rapture, built the city with cues taken from Ayn Rand’s Objectivism philosophy. But while the philosophy inspires Rapture, it’s the intensity that builds it. Each character you meet seems to embody this self idealism and intensity. You go deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole trying to uncover the truth about this city in ruins. What you find at the bottom is a disturbing and cautionary tale of human behavior and the dangers of total unquestioning belief.
Video Game Apocalypse: Day 4
We’re on Day 4 and only two days away from the R-day. So many great games to try to squeeze in before then that I might just cover a little extra today. Today I bring you a double feature. Actually, this was pretty easy to do since both games came neatly packaged in the same disc.
WARNING: This article may contain slight spoilers to Half-Life 1
Half-Life 2 (series)
(Xbox 360, PS3, PC, Mac)
Ladies, do you like the strong silent type? Look no further than Gordon Freeman, the main character in Valve’s Half-Life series. He is a man of many actions but so few on words. Half-life 2 takes place approximately two decades after the events in the original Half-Life where a science experiment at Black Mesa goes bad…very bad. A cross dimensional portal is created and confused/hostile creatures decide to invade Earth’s greener pastures. This leads to a military race of aliens to cross over onto Earth who quickly enslave the human race. Freeman I’m sure would have gladly lead the battles against the invading aliens if he hadn’t been put into a state of stasis by a mysterious deity-like man (only known as G-Man). While the human race is pretty much enslaved, pockets of resistance exist fighting back. 20 years later, Freeman is taken out of stasis by G-Man and inserted right into the middle of the human resistance.
In the games we’ve covered so far, world apocalypse has been herald by people or events out the main character’s control (as far as we know). In Half-Life however, Gordon Freeman was involved in the Black Mesa experiment thus being partially responsible for the human enslavement that followed. The guilty feeling doesn’t last long long, especially when you’re running through close apartment quarters, open fields, sewer systems, and many more environments with enemy fire nipping at your heels.
With the resistance gaining strength, you often run through these pockets of fighters. However, you spend much of your fight alone. This is quite okay since you do have some company in the form of creative weapons including the innovative gravity gun. Half-life 2 is only but one of the many treasures found in the Orange Box.
Portal
(Xbox 360, PS3, PC, Mac)
Ever have one of those days where you wake up alone, in a strange place not knowing how you exactly got there, and have a demented AI forcing you to run endless tests? If so then you’re probably test subject x for Aperture science. While a clean, white laboratory may not exactly be your typical apocalypse setting, running through test after test with no end in sight with only a companion cube for a friend feels like the end of the world. Portal isn’t very long, but the entertainment it provides with its puzzles is long lasting. If I were to be left behind with only a diabolical robot with an obsession with tests and a portal gun, I’d be okay with that.
Day 5 Preview: The perfect place for the perfect time.
Video Game Apocalypse: Day 3
Don’t lie. I’m sure all of us have thought at one point in time, “What would I do if there ever was a zombie attack?”. I’m double sure many of us have created several zombie survival plans in our head or even have them written down (I myself have 7 different plans). It may sound like science fiction, but there are insects and parasites in real life that have the ability to mind control their hosts. Parasitic spiny-head worms, green jeweled wasps, and many more parasites are out there are just waiting to control another species for its own purpose. Is it so farfetched, then, that our world is doomed to be destroyed by a virus/parasite that turns humans into brain craving lunatics? Okay, maybe it is. But in Day 3′s game we get to experience this world overrun with people who want a piece of your mind.
Left 4 Dead 2
(Xbox 360, PC)
Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 take on that popular idea of being an immune survivor to a disease which has turned much of your race into mindless zombies. The concept is fairly simple and straight forward. You are paired up with three other survivors and must try to get from point A to point B without becoming finger food for the zombies. You are given an array of weapons to kill the many zombies that stand between you and your quest. These zombies aren’t your typical Dawn of the Dead zombies where they do the Michael Jackson shuffle towards you. These zombies are the 28 Days Later types of zombies that come barreling at you full force. Alone or in small packs, they aren’t a problem, but when a horde comes rushing in on you from every direction you will need your wits and team around you. Especially when the special infected move in.
What really makes left 4 Dead stand out is its online modes. You can team up with three friends to fight alongside you through the campaign or go into one of the several versus modes Left 4 Dead has and play as both survivors and the infected. And don’t think you can become the lone wolf of the team and go blasting off into the sunset by yourself. Teamwork is essential in this game. Without it, you will find yourself being turned into a play toy for the special infected.
Not only is it good practice for the inevitable zombie apocalypse, Left 4 Dead is an incredibly fun game and one that is made even better when you’re able to play it with friends.
Day 4 Preview: Only two words needed. Crowbar and cake.
Dragon Age 2
Introduction
Bioware’s Dragon Age: Origins was released in 09 and was said to be the spiritual successor to Baldur’s Gate. Origins gained the respect of many RPG fans due to it’s dark sided and mature nature. Dragon Age 2 has finally arrived with many new tricks up it’s sleeve. Does it hold up to the hype? Or is it a letdown? Read on!
You are Hawke, a Fereldan who is fleeing with his Family from a Dark Spawn invasion during the events of the first game. The story is told through a Dwarf named Varric who is being questioned by an unknown party. Spanning over the course of decade, Hawke’s rise to the Champion of Kirkwall is brutal, surprising and harsh.
The Gameplay
Dragon Age 2′s gameplay has been retooled somewhat. You now have the ability to manually attack enemies, and I don’t mean by using talents, you can now actually be the one who swings your weapon. This gives you the feeling of having more control, it doesn’t feel tacked on and is implemented nicely into the game’s combat. Don’t worry the game is nowhere near being a hack n slash. For some SUPER strategic players this could be distracting, but most should find it fair.
You may be one of three classes. The Warrior may use two handed weapons or a sword and shield to tank through enemies. A Mage can attack from a distance using their staff and wide array of magic. Or finally the Rogue, who can quickly attack using daggers or fight at a distance using a bow and arrow. The ability to choose other races is gone, as this game’s story is more focused on the actual tale of a hero. The work you put into Dragon Age: Origins hasn’t gone to waste though, your choices in the first game may be imported to the second and may change the lore of the world.
Now to get into the meat of the game. Dragon Age 2 takes you to the city of Kirkwall where you’ll find all sorts of shady characters. Throughout the game you’ll find party members, they actually have depth and staying friendly with some can be hard if you’re a real moralist. Quests can be found all over in Kirkwall or from members in your group. The game keeps you engaged, there’s usually always a place to go, a person to talk to, a group of baddies to fight, and a new threat on the rise.
Most of the game’s quests and main story do indeed take place in the city, there are plenty of moments however when you most go out of Kirkwall to surrounding areas in order to deal with certain issues. The game’s enemies are varied. In the first game the Darkspawn were the main foe, they’re still hanging around in this one but hardly. Now you’ll fight thugs, demons, even bigger demons, mages, corrupt templars, things from all over the spectrum which helps keep the surprise element there and makes you think of new strategies to fight these new baddies. The game has also gotten a bit more “violent”, allowing you to slice through a group of enemies turning them into puddles of gore.
Talking with and getting to know your companions more is important. The dialogue is interesting and gives the characters background, becoming friends or rivals with party members grants them bonus passive abilities. It may also effect the story in unforeseen ways. Leveling up the characters is strategic within itself, knowing what they’re best in and what attributes to boost up are key to winning tough battles. You may switch the weapons and items that your allies carry, but you cannot change their armor like in the first. Instead you will find items throughout the game that will automatically upgrade your party member’s armor. You can even craft certain items if you have the materials, which may be used to enchant your weapons giving them upgrades like fire or ice damage.
The game has certainly become more cinematic as well. Dragon Age 2 can get a fair amount of AI on-screen fighting while keeping a stable framerate, helping those epic moments feel epic. Key events that happen in the game can be approached differently and have alternate outcomes. Some can only be reached if you’re good enough, really. When you feel like you’re going to encounter a boss fight be prepared the battles can be long, endurance is what can pull you through and when you achieve victory you feel rewarded.
The Atmosphere
Dragon Age 2′s scenery, art style, characters and story truly shine in this game. The scenery and art style are fresh, giving the game a unique look. The characters are some of the most well thought out I’ve seen in a while, each have their own personality, history, and have something to contribute to the overall scheme of things. The Story is……. AWESOME. The choices made and people you associate with all matter, the game will throw curve balls at you and how you adapt to the situations will effect the outcome. You feel like Hawke really does rise up in the world.
The Verdict
Dragon Age 2 is, to me of course, an almost perfect role playing adventure. When you triumph over baddies you feel like a badass, especially when you’ve used one of my favorite strategies “hit and run.” Really though even if you’re not into more story driven RPGs like this, give this one a chance. It took me 31 hours to complete this game, and I didn’t do everything that I could. The people saying it’s too short should stop skipping dialogue or just stop tanking through the main quests. There’s been complaints about the graphics but I’ll tell you they’re fine, I think it’s more of the new art style that people aren’t liking.
CHECK IT OUT! The game is addicting, I beat it and wanted more. The story is compelling and the combat is fun. I really could not recommend this game to you anymore.
Daily Bits 7/30/10
In today’s Daily Bits: It’s not longer a RUSE, Best Buy trying to match Amazon, Insomniac announces an announcement, Intellivision Lives and StarCraft+Lego?
This is not a feint: RUSE to release September 7
Some would argue Ubisoft has been too in love with it’s World War II RTS’s name, offering several different release dates that have not stuck. So now the company expects everyone to believe that the new one for RUSE, September 7, will hold. The date was originally tweetedby Ubisoft’s Aymeric Evennou, leaving people to wonder if it was just another fake, but the company has independently verifies this will be the date the game releases on the PS3, 360 and PC.
Unless Ubisoft changes its policies on PC DRM, it will not matter to me when this game releases. RTSs are really only good on PC, but I will not buy a PC game with that kind of draconian copy protection.
Best Buy lowering price on 360 bundles
On August 2, Amazon is planning on offering a sale of the Final Fantasy XIII Xbox 360 along with along with Bioshock 2 and UFC Undisputed 2010 for $300. Well, a reliable source is telling Joystiq that Best Buy is going to be reducing its versions of that bundle along with the Splinter Cell 360 to $299 until they are sold out of the product. While the deal might not be quite as sweet as Amazon’s, it will be going on for more than one day, and for those who do not like to purchase consoles online, this will give them another option.
See, this is why competition is a good thing.
Insomniac will announce new game before PAX
So it appears more companies have decided to announce announcements. Sometime between now and Labor Day Weekend’s PAX Prime, Insomniac will be announcing a new game, which will be demoed at the Penny Arcade Expo. Now before you all get too excited, this will be a PS3 exclusive game; Insomniac is not ready to reveal its multiplatform game the company is making for EA.
The rumors are this will be Resistance 3. I will leave it to you to decide whether that is a good thing.
Intellivision to make a comeback on DS
Intellivision fans rejoice; the games we grew up playing are making a return appearance on the Nintendo DS. Virtual Play games has announced Intellivision Lives!, a collection of 60 games from the Matel console that captured the hearts of retro gamers (granted, we were not retro at the time). Along with such hits as Astro Smash, Armor Battle, Night Stalker and Shark! Shark!, the collection includes 6 games never actually released. The collection is due out in September.
So, you think this might lead to a Retro Active on the Intellivision?
StarCraft done with Legos!
I have nothing else to add to this. Just check out the video (courtesy of Machinima.com).

XBLA Breach Gets Delayed
The Xbox Live title that had a lot of people excited at E3, Breach will be getting a pretty significant delay. Instead of dropping this year, the game will release in January.
Atomic President Peter Tamte says the delay will give the studio the time they need to add a “hardcore” mode to the game to mimic the real life military situations.
Luckily there were features we had been thinking of adding to the title, and now we have the opportunity to do just that. Unlike with Six Days in Fallujah, which was delayed indefinitely when Konami pulled out, we are publishing Breach ourselves, and it will be out in January… I’ve always said, we don’t make simulations for the public and we don’t make games for the government. However, we have come to realize there is a growing segment of the gaming population that wants to test these simulation systems out for themselves, which is why we’re adding features, like a Hardcore mode, to Breach.”
Breach will now release day and day with the Xbox 360 version and will still carry a $15 price tag.
Netflix Streams Over the Border
It is a happy day today for the Canadians as Netflix have announced today that their streaming service will be coming to Canada later this fall. It may not be a big deal for people in the US because we have been spoiled with streaming content for quite some time now, but people across the northern border couldn’t be more happy.
The Canadian version of Netflix will have its first ever separate package that allows customers to choose a streaming-only package instead of having to pay for a DVD bundle.
No other details have been mentioned including pricing information, but we imagine that to surface shortly.

Ubisoft Steers Driver: San Francisco To 2011
During Ubisoft’s estimated earnings report today, they decided to delay Driver: San francisco to an early Q1 2011 release time frame. Reason being? because of the “competitive market at Christmas.”
I never know if it’s a good thing or not when company’s push back there title because of the other popular games coming out. It may be good for the developer but is it a sign for the gamers that it may not be a great game? Let us know what you think.

Not much else has been said about the title, but if the game can pull off under water gameplay it could be a nice change of pace from what we are use to seeing.

Hulu Plus May Cost More Than You Think On The PS3
Rumors have been circulating around the internet about Hulu Plus only working on the PS3 if you subscribe to Sony’s new Playstation Plus, according to a write up by Technologizer.
This may not seem that big a deal to people who plan on being a Playstation Plus member. But for those not interested in the service may not want to cancel there cable just yet. Again these are just rumors at the moment but I would not put it past Sony to do something like this.
It Can Only End One Way For The Mob
The great minds behind Mafia 2 originally wanted to make the game with multiple endings depending on the players choices. Now Illusion Softworks have scrapped that idea to make one “great” ending to give you the best possible experience.
Here is the official word from senior producer Denby Grace
We had four multiple endings at one point in the game, and then we looked at it and we had one really outstanding, great ending to our story. We worked on these things and we have our players that focus test and we found that people were just replaying and ultimately only felt satisfied when they got to the one great ending. We just said, ‘You know what? Let’s just ditch these other endings, this is the ending everyone wants.
It seems that they truly know what the gamers want, I know personally I cannot wait for this title.
Mafia 2 will be robbing the stores August 24th for the PC, Xbox 360, and PS3.
