World Domination? There’s an App for That.

World Domination? There’s an App for That.

Ever wanted to claim cities, attack countries, build up a massive army and make advances in tech all from your iPhone?  Well now you can, this weekend marked the release for Civilization Revolution for the iPhone. I have played the 360 version and I have to say it was really the first strategy game I ever played! It caused me to fall in love with the genre. It appears that everything is in tack from the console versions minus the graphics. There is a paid version which is avaible for $5 and a lite-version for free. In the lite-version, you can choose from 3 countries and play up to the Middle Era. So what are you waiting for, go conquer the world!

Blue Defense!

Blue Defense!

In Blue Defense you control a laser cannon on an unknown planet. This cannon rotates on the axis of the planet. When you begin the game the planet is located at the bottom of the screen. The cannon’s laser runs at a continual stream so all you have to do is tilt the iPhone in the direction you want to stream to go. Red objects will then fly towards to planet and you must destroy them before they reach the planet.

As you move on in Blue Defense the location of the planet will change. Sometimes it will be located at the bottom of a vertically positioned screen, other times at the bottom of a horizontally positioned screen, and in the later levels it’s positioned in the center of your screen for full 360 degree tilting. These position changes really break up the gameplay in a great way.

Overall Blue Defense really utilizes the iPhone’s control scheme and fluid controls are the most important thing for a shooter. At $0.99 Blue Defense is a steal.

Movie Challenge

Movie Challenge

Visually appealing, Movie Challenge provides entertainment when you have a few minutes to kill or even an hour. Featuring a very slick feel, responsive control, and fun sound effects Movie Challenge is the must-have movie trivia application for the iPhone. First off MT is broken down by different genres and directors. For each you are presented with options such as: Trivia, True or False, Quotes, Order, Jumble, What Year?, and ‘Preview’ which are timed. As you progress you unlock further genres and are scored based on your responses.

I found all of the modes fun and they did a good job of keeping things varied. I especially liked the Trivia, True and False, and Order. They really make you think. The only mode I came to dread was the hangman like ‘Preview’ which I felt had less to do with trivia and was fairly random. I’m sure it would require a lot of space, but a ‘Guess the Screenshot’ mode would be neat where you had to name a film based on a random screen capture. Movie Challenge also offers what are known as “power-ups” these are meant to help you along the way. Each power-up is different according to the type of mode you are playing.

At $1.99 you can’t go wrong with Movie Challenge. It is a fun way to test your film knowledge. I consider myself a pretty big film buff and I was pleasantly surprised by being stumped by some questions while feeling proud that I knew others. With three difficulties to master Movie Challenge has plenty of content to bring you back time and time again. Movie Challenge is the must-have movie trivia application for the iPhone.
