2079

2079

First off I just want to say that 2079 is in my opinion the most impressive game I have seen on the iPhone thus far. 2079 is very similar to Geometry Wars in that you control a ship that is confined it a square area. Enemies will spawn and you are to destroy them.

The one thing that I love most about 2079 is the fact that it controls perfectly. To control the ship you tilt the iPhone/iPod in the direction you want the ship to fly, the laser/gun on the other hand is controlled via a small circle in the bottom right corner of the screen. You just slide your thumb around the circle to point where you want to fire. To blast everything on the screen at once you just shake the iPhone/iPod. Once you get your hands on it and start playing the controls will feel like second nature, there is no learning curve with 2079.

2079 offers two modes, one which is called “Traditional” which is a full zoomed out playing style and the other is “Normal” which focuses the camera on the ship itself. Both modes are equally fun. The art style of 2079 fits the game perfectly as well. The “playing square” is filled with circles that flip over when you fly over them, this reminds me of the way Geometry Wars’ grid would distort as you would fly over it. It’s little things like this that make this game look great.

I highly recommend 2079 to anyone who likes Geometry Wars or anyone who likes shooters for that matter. Controls are very important in a game like this and 2079 nails them. At $0.99 2079 is a must buy.

Blue Defense!

Blue Defense!

In Blue Defense you control a laser cannon on an unknown planet. This cannon rotates on the axis of the planet. When you begin the game the planet is located at the bottom of the screen. The cannon’s laser runs at a continual stream so all you have to do is tilt the iPhone in the direction you want to stream to go. Red objects will then fly towards to planet and you must destroy them before they reach the planet.

As you move on in Blue Defense the location of the planet will change. Sometimes it will be located at the bottom of a vertically positioned screen, other times at the bottom of a horizontally positioned screen, and in the later levels it’s positioned in the center of your screen for full 360 degree tilting. These position changes really break up the gameplay in a great way.

Overall Blue Defense really utilizes the iPhone’s control scheme and fluid controls are the most important thing for a shooter. At $0.99 Blue Defense is a steal.
