Gameinformer Overview – September Update 2011

Can you believe it’s September? School has started and I hope you’re having fun in college, because I know I’m having fun while not in college! Either way, we have quite a few games to pick from today, so lets not waste anymore time and lets just jump in right away!

One of the first games listed in this months gameinformer issue is called tropico 4. Now, to be honest, this is the first time hearing of this game for me, but obviously this is the fourth installment in this series, so I suppose that would mean there are fans out there somewhere. From the looks of this game, it seems like it’s a replica of the sims games, except you’re on an island with a volcano on it. To me, this doesn’t seem interesting, but for those of you who are into this kind of thing, September 16th is the day to look forward to!

One thing that did come about early this September is Call of Duty XP! Unfortunately, I missed it this year, but rumor has it, that there will be another next year, so make sure you get signed up for this one, because I know I sure will be!

<div style=”display:block;float:right;margin: 5px 10px 5px 5px;”>

Next up on our list today is Borderlands 2! Unfortunately I never picked up Borderlands, the first one, but whenever Borderlands 2 is set to release in 2012, you can count me in, because I will not miss this opportunity this time! Graphically, it looks like the last one did, it has a very artsy and creative feel to it, so for everyone who fell in love with that look in the first edition, you should prepare yourself for some more, because Borderlands 2 is right around the corner!

One more upcoming title that has touched the hearts of all Playstation 3 owners is Resistance 3! When the PS3 system originally launched, this was one of the only games out for it at the time, so everyone who jumped on the Sony train early on, have had their fair share of gameplay in the Resistance franchise. So for everyone who liked the previous installments, get out your pens and mark September 6th on your calendars!

As always, there are a couple sports titles being released in the near future. Now, I used to be a huge fan of the NHL games back in the day, but as time progressed, I have evolved into a first person shooter beast, so I don’t play as many sports titles anymore, but I do like to keep a couple on the shelf just encase I need to break out a party game once in a while. Other than that though, I really have no use for any sports titles, for the simple fact that I’m not really a hardcore sports fan. I don’t play fantasy football and I don’t watch any sports games religiously, so as far as sports games go, they just don’t tickle my fancy.

Last, but not least, we have Guild Wars 2. Now, if you’ve been gaming for any period of time, I’m sure that you have got your hands on some MMORPG game and if you’re anything like the rest of us, you couldn’t put it down for years. This being said, when I hear about a new MMORPG being released to the public, I get a little tingly feeling inside and just as the ring called to Froto in the Lord of the Rings, every new MMORPG game calls to me and it’s not easy to resist!

Apparently, Guild Wars 2 is focusing very heavily on their storyline, which should be super interesting to see, because I think it would be fairly difficult to fluidly work in a strong storyline into any MMORPG game, but let’s hope that Guild Wars 2 doesn’t let us down and maybe GW2 will take off and we can all play it together and live happily ever after.

This just about wraps up this fairy tale, so bring up a browser and start researching some of these games a little deeper while you wait for Octobers issue of Gameinformer to be released!

Release Date List: 7/18-7/25

This week the Summer of Arcade promotion kicks off on Xbox Live with LIMBO. Also Need for Speed: World on the PC and Alien Swarm. Check out the full list of titles in the link below.

Source

Madden NFL 11 Demo Tackles XBL and PSN

Football season is right around the corner people, and with that usually means another EA Madden NFL game. On July 27th you can download the demo that pits last years AFC Championship game between the Indianapolis Colts and the New York Jets. The demo will have 5 minute quarters and give you a option to choose between four select difficulties: Rookie, Pro, All Pro, and All-Madden.

A lot of people are upset with EA for there Ten dollar online pass tactic, and rightfully so. Will you be picking up the new Madden this year?

Source

XBLA Breach Gets Delayed

The Xbox Live title that had a lot of people excited at E3, Breach will be getting a pretty significant delay. Instead of dropping this year, the game will release in January.

Atomic President Peter Tamte says the delay will give the studio the time they need to add a “hardcore” mode to the game to mimic the real life military situations.

Luckily there were features we had been thinking of adding to the title, and now we have the opportunity to do just that. Unlike with Six Days in Fallujah, which was delayed indefinitely when Konami pulled out, we are publishing Breach ourselves, and it will be out in January… I’ve always said, we don’t make simulations for the public and we don’t make games for the government. However, we have come to realize there is a growing segment of the gaming population that wants to test these simulation systems out for themselves, which is why we’re adding features, like a Hardcore mode, to Breach.”

Breach will now release day and day with the Xbox 360 version and will still carry a $15 price tag.

Source

Netflix Streams Over the Border

It is a happy day today for the Canadians as Netflix have announced today that their streaming service will be coming to Canada later this fall. It may not be a big deal for people in the US because we have been spoiled with streaming content for quite some time now, but people across the northern border couldn’t be more happy.

The Canadian version of Netflix will have its first ever separate package that allows customers to choose a streaming-only package instead of having to pay for a DVD bundle.

No other details have been mentioned including pricing information, but we imagine that to surface shortly.

Bayonetta Discounted On Amazon Today

Q1 of this year was a crazy time for gamers with what seemed like a new triple A game coming every week. But in case you’ve missed out on Platinum Games “Bayonetta” today would be the best day to scoop it up.

Amazon is having a deal on the game and you can pick it up for 20$ for the PS3. Unfortunately the deal is not running on the Xbox 360 as well, but if your looking for a great game to play before the “next big thing” then you cannot go wrong with Bayonetta.

Release Date List: 7/4-7/11

This upcoming week is another busy one. But the game that is on everyone’s mind is Crackdown 2. For those that may not be interested in hunting down orbs, there’s a bunch of other games you can choose from including the PC release of Sniper: Ghost Warrior. Take a look at the link below for the full list of titles.

High Demand For Xbox 360 Slim’s

It shouldn’t come as a shock, Microsoft has reported a “unprecedented demand” from retailers for the new 360 Slims. As well as there Elite and Arcade models due to there recent price drops.

Normally this kind of announcement is a shot at the competition. Obviously there going to sell. Why wouldn’t they?

We will soon find out the exact number on next months NPD’s.

Source

Alan Wake Has A Scary Debut

NPD sale numbers hit today and unfortunately Alan Wake only managed to sell 145,000 units during its mid May debut. It still was the eighth best selling game for the month, but nowhere near what I assume Remedy would have liked.

If you want an idea on how another game did, Red Dead Redemption sold 1,513,000 in May which also came out the same day as Alan Wake.

Bioshock 2 Gets More Singleplayer

2K Marin has announced the first piece of DLC singleplayer for Bioshock 2. The “Protector Trials” will focus on the section of the game when the little sister gathers the ADAM from the corpses. You will play the Big Daddy and will be in charge of protecting the little sister from the crazed splicers.

There will be three different difficulties that you can test your skills at, across six new maps taken from the most popular areas in the Bioshock 2 world.

The “Protector Trials” will be coming to the Xbox 360, PC, and PS3 on August 3rd, and will run you 400 Microsoft Points or $5.

Modnation Racers Wins The Race, No Photo Finish

Last month was a crazy time for Racing fans, with Modnation Racers, Blur, and Split Second all coming out within a week of each other. The NPD’s have revealed the best selling of the three, yet none were really outstanding. Modnation Racers came in the 15th spot on the software sales, which isn’t too bad considering it was a Sony exclusive only title.

However, Blur and Split/Second unfortunately didn’t even make the top 30 in game sales. Analyst Michael Pachter said that Blur sold “Well below our estimate of 100,000 units” and that Split/Second did not do much better.

It’s a shame that good games do not get that recognition it deserves at times, but when you have 3 potential top racing games coming out within 7 days of each other, what do you really expect?

Guitar Hero Queen Coming In 2011?

Swedish website DN.se recently spoke with Queen guitarist Brian May, to talk about the ‘We Will Rock You’ Musical. What is even more interesting though is his possible slip up regarding a Queen Guitar Hero that could be in the works for a 2011 release.

May commented by saying ” We have invented a way for the players to participate in our concerts” but said he can’t say anything else about it.

As of right now there has been no word from Activision regarding the recent news. True or not we will just have to wait and see.

Kinect Playable At Microsoft Store Today

If you cannot wait until November 4th to try out Kinect, then you can take a trip over to the Microsoft store today and jump around like a fool in public. Only problem is that its only in four locations. If you happen to live near Scottsdale, Arizona, Mission Viejo California, San Diego California or Lone Tree, Colorado then hop in there and give it a try. If not, well then your just going to have to wait like the rest of us.

Something worth playing on the Wii?

I remember growing up playing A Boy and His Blob for the NES with my best friend John. We never really got very far in the game but just the fact that they made a game called “A Boy and His Blob” was reason enough to make us play it. It’s funny to see that someone has taken the initiative to make a re-make of the title. Ever since it was announced I thought it was a great idea, especially with the art direction the developers decided to take. The original NES version was not a pretty site so to make the game any bit of interesting the developers had to turn it into something worth looking at. I believe the art direction is what made the game get the attention that it did.

Even though the art direction is totally different the gameplay still holds true to the original game. As you may have heard the game does not take advantage of the Wii’s motion controls which is a good thing because that’s usually more of a gimmick than anything else. The main concept is that you feed a white blob different jelly beans to make him change in to different objects. For example a red jelly bean makes him change into a hole in the ground or a black jelly bean turns him into a ladder. There are 15 total objects the blob can transform into. Each level is preset with certain jelly beans and this forces you to think about the steps you need to take to collect the three treasure chests that are in each level. There are 10 levels in each world and there are 4 worlds. If you collect all three treasure chests for the level a bonus level is then unlocked for you to play. The concept of trying to collect the treasure chests kind of reminded me of the puzzle piece collecting in Braid.

ABAHB’s controls do take some time to get used to. Not because they are mapped poorly but because the game is kind of tedious…switch to the black jelly bean, throw the black jelly bean, climb up the ladder, switch over to the red jelly bean, call the blob, throw the red jelly bean, jump through the hole, etc. It is this reason alone that made me get a little tired of the game after playing longer sessions. The repetitive nature takes its toll after a while. Other than that minor gripe I would say A Boy and His Blob is a perfect remake of the classic NES title. It’s polished, fun, and challenging. I honestly couldn’t ask for more in a remake of this game. Hopefully ABAHB will inspire developers to remake the more unique NES titles we’ve come to know and love.

If you haven’t dusted off your Wii in a while and you are looking for a solid game to play on the system then I would highly suggest A Boy and His Blob. The game is very cute so it will definitely attract younger kids but don’t let the game fool you, it is not easy.
